Markets and Customs
December 30, 2007
Situated on the banks of a river just nine kilometers from the Chinese border, Can Cau is in a sprawling town. Predominantly a farming and livestock market, Can Cau offers a sensory experience of life in the mountains. Black potbellied pigs, cages of chicken and tethered water buffalo are carefully looked over and gradually sold.
Basic wares like traditional clothing, sacks of rice, old farming implements and lengths of coarse raw wool and hemp are laid out and sold from tables and large wicker baskets. The locals are mostly of the Flower H’Mong minority group, identifiable by their traditional multi-colored embroidered garments.
